Fat madhor qė Letėrsia shqiptare ka njė krijues tė tillė pėrmastor …
nga Kristaq F. Shabani

Dritėro Agolli lindi nė Menkulas tė Devollit. Filloi shkollimin nė vendlindje, mandej vijoi studimet e mesme nė gjģmnazin e Gjirokastrės, njė shkollė kjo me mjaft tradita dhe me zė nė sistemin e atėhershėm tė arsimit shqiptar. Falė aftėsisė sė tij iu dha e drejta qė studimet e larta pėr letėrsi t’i pėrfundojė nė Petėrburg. Ai u zgjodh pėr tridhjetė vjet me radhė deputet nė Kuvendin e Shqipėrisė, pasi ishte i nevojshėm prezenca e fjalės sė tij tė menēuruar. A s’ėshtė poeti Dritėro Agolli njė rast i tillė epokal: shkrimtar e poet i madh i njė vendi dhe "gjuhe tė vogėl"? Dritėro Agolli ėshtė dhe sot njė figurė shumė e dashur dhe e nderuar. Po i tillė, po kaq i dashur ėshtė ai edhe pėr lexuesit nė metropolet e kulturės botėrore.

Shkrimtar, publicist, veprimtar shoqėror, anėtar i Akademisė sė Shkencave tė Shqipėrisė.

Dritėro Agolli (born 1931) is an Albanian poet, writer, politician, and former president of the defunct Albanian League of Writers and Artists. He studied in Leningrad in the Soviet Union and wrote primarily poetry, but also short stories, essays, plays, and novels. He was head of the Albanian League of Writers and Artists from the purge of Fadil Paērami and Todi Lubonja at the Fourth Plenary Session of the Albanian Party of Labour from 1973 until 1992.

Agolli was born to a peasant family in Menkulas in the Devoll District near Korēa and finished high school in Gjirokastra in 1952. He later continued his studies at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Leningrad and took up journalism upon his return to Albania, working for the daily newspaper Zėri i Popullit (English: The People’s Voice) for fifteen years. Agolli was also a deputy in the Albanian Parliament.

Beginnings as a poet
Agolli first attained success as a poet. His early verse collections I went out on the street (Albanian: Nė rrugė dolla, Tirana 1958), My steps on the pavement (Albanian: Hapat e mija nė asfalt, Tirana 1961), and Mountain paths and sidewalks (Albanian: Shtigje malesh dhe trotuare, Tirana 1965), introduced him to the reading public as a sincere and gifted lyric poet of the soil who already demonstrated masterful verse technique. An attachment to his roots came to form the basis of his poetic credo.

Prose attempts
As a prose writer, Agolli first made a name for himself with the novel Commissar Memo (Albanian: Komisari Memo, Tirana 1970), translated in English as The bronze bust, Tirana 1975 originally conceived as a short story.
Agolli’s second novel, The man with the cannon (Albanian: Njeriu me top, Tirana 1975) translated into English in 1983, takes up the partisan theme from a different angle and with a somewhat more subtle approach.
After these two novels of partisan heroism, Agolli produced also some interesting work, his satirical Splendour and fall of comrade Zylo (Albanian: Shkėlqimi dhe rėnja e shokut Zylo, Tirana 1973), which has proved to be his claim to fame. Comrade Zylo is the epitome of the well-meaning but incompetent apparatchik, a director of an obscure government cultural affairs department. His pathetic vanity, his quixotic fervour, his grotesque public behaviour, in short his splendour and fall, are all recorded in ironic detail by his hard-working and more astute subordinate and friend Demkė who serves as a neutral observer. Comrade Zylo is a universal figure, a character to be found in any society or age, and critics have been quick to draw parallels ranging from Daniel Defoe and Nikolay Gogol’s Revizor to Franz Kafka and Milan Kundera's Zert. But it is doubtless the Eastern European reader who will best appreciate all the subtleties of the novel. Splendour and fall of comrade Zylo first appeared in 1972 in the Tirana satirical journal Hosteni (English: The goad) and was published the following year in a monograph form.
All in all, Agolli’s strength in prose lies in the short story rather than in the novel. Sixteen of his short stories were published in English in the volume: Short stories, Tirana 1985.

One early collection of tales, the 213-page The noise of winds of the past (Albanian: Zhurma e ererave tė dikurshme, Tirana 1964), had the distinction of being banned and ‘turned into cardboard.’ The author was accused of Soviet revisionism at a time when the party had called for more Maoist revolutionary concepts in literature and greater devotion to the working masses.

Prolific through the 1990s
Dritėro Agolli has been a prolific writer throughout the 1990s, a rare voice of humanity and sincerity in Albanian letters. He has been exceptionally productive in recent years, with numerous well-received verse collections: The time beggar (Albanian: Lypėsi i kohės, Tirana 1995), The spirit of our forefathers (Albanian: Shpirti i gjyshėrve, Tirana 1996), The strange man approaches (Albanian: Vjen njeriu i ēuditshėm, Tirana 1996), Ballad for my father and myself (Albanian: Baladė pėr tim atė dhe pėr vete, Tirana 1997), Midnight notebook (Albanian: Fletorka e mesnatės, Tirana 1998), and The distant bell (Albanian: Kambana e largėt, Tirana 1998). Among recent volumes of prose are: the short story collection Insane people (Albanian: Njerėz tė krisur, Tirana 1995); The naked horseman (Albanian: Kalorėsi lakuriq, Tirana 1996), and The devil’s box (Albanian: Arka e djallit, Tirana 1997).

Agolli delights in earthy rhymes and unusual figures of speech. His fresh, clear and direct verse, coloured with the warm foaming milk of brown cows in the agricultural co-operatives, with ears of ripening corn in the Devoll valley and with the dark furrows of tilled soil, has lost none of the bucolic focus which remained the poet’s strength, and one which he cultivates consciously. Over the years, Agolli has advanced and managed to remain true to himself and to his readers despite the vicissitudes of public life. In the volume The belated pilgrim (Albanian: Pelegrini i vonuar, Tirana 1993), his first book ever written without an eye to the invisible censor, we encounter a new chapter: not only in the life of the poet, but also in the struggle of his people for survival. Agolli confesses in a postscript: "For poets of my generation, an age of disappointments and dilemmas has dawned, an age in which to re-evaluate what we produced, without forgetting or denying those fair and humane values we brought forth. But the fortress of ideas and ideals which we believed in, some of us completely, others partially, has all but collapsed, and in its walls burn the fires of our dreams. Those fires have awakened a different type of verse..."

Though Agolli was a leading figure in the communist nomenclature, he remained a highly respected pillar of public and literary life after the fall of the dictatorship, and is still one the most widely read authors in Albania. In the early 1990s, he was active for several years as a member of parliament for the Socialist Party of Albania. He also founded his own Dritėro Publishing Company by means of which he has been able to publish many new volumes of prose and poetry, and make a major impact on literary and intellectual life in the country.

1.
hardhia duhet spėrkatur shpejt me gurkali
kurkush s'e mendonte me ē'dru do ta ngrinim,
kishim ndėrmend ta ndėrtonim me degė hardhie
dhe vela t’i vinim.

Bodrumet e saj t'i mbushnim me poēe me verė
dhe tė lundronim nė ishujt e Havajės;
ta pinim verėn me vajzat e ishujve nė Belvedere,
zezaku tė bėnte fresk me fletėn e palmes.

2.
Mos vdis se kalit i ra nė vrapim njė patkua,
dhe nisi ta ngrejė nga dhimbja kėmbėn e parė;
kėrkojmė patkonj e s'na jep njeri hua,
s'e gjejme as nallbanin e marrė.

Ne ėndėrronim tė shkonim nė hipodrome,
nė vende tė lumtura, ku munden me kuaj,
tani dhe kali ēalon e s'na ha as barin e njomė;
me sy. si gota, na sheh si tė huaj...

3.
Mos vdis, se dielli nė oborr e ka shtruar sofrėn e madhe,
dhe presim tė vijnė vajzat tė gjitha,
tė gjitha ato qė t’i u thoshje "sorkadheve",
kur grisnin fustanet nė driza.

4.
Mos vdis nė dhomėn e heshtur i shtrirė
ėshtė turp kaq shpejt tė rrish e tė vdesėsh!
Ne ėndėrronim njė vdekje mė tė mirė:
duke vdekur, fytyrat tona t’i shihnim nė pikėn e vesės.

In the Ancient City
The two of us stroll through the ancient city,
With its many windows and orchards,
From every window we hear a ballad,
From every portal we hear a poem.
Can you feel the sound of verse?
It comes with a warm breeze from the city's ancient past,
It comes from the mouths of statues sleeping under the doorsteps,
And under the roots of vines hanging from the trellises.
Had you come two thousand years ago,
The ancient sculptors
Would have fashioned you in Alpine marble
And you would have slept under the foundations of a doorway,
Undiscovered for a long time,
And I would have arrived two thousand years later
To discover you and carry you off in marble to the Art Gallery...
Don't laugh!
That is certainly the way it would have happened.
How fortunate it is that you were not born two thousand years ago
And that we could now meet.
In my arms you will be warmer
Than as a statue in the gallery.
First Nostalgia
'You who leave your first hearth,
Do you know that it burns with
fiery nostalgia?'

On the boulevard I stop for a moment in silence
In front of my old apartment building.
There is light in the windows
Where someone else now lives happily.

Greetings, brother, I say to myself,
Looking in the window from afar,
From the trees along the pavement a leaf
Falls onto the collar of my jacket.

So many years I lived there in peace and in excitement,
Where the lights are shining in the windows tonight.
I wrote many poems and articles,
Got married and raised children.

How many sleepless nights I spent
Pondering over my notes and books,
And entertaining friends who arrived at the door,
Entertaining them leisurely and hospitably.

And my friends - wise, noisy, audacious,
Read whatever I had written
With pleasure or turning up their noses,
Saying, 'We expect real verse!'

And who knows how often with them
I took to the roads of Albania!
To hell with the kitchen, cups and saucers and spoons,
Let us look for verse together on our way!

And again with books and notes
I returned to that small apartment,
With my trousers full of burrs,
And juniper needles in my hair...

On the boulevard I stop and light a cigarette
In front of my old apartment building.
The glow in the windows burns with a first nostalgia
That can never be transferred elsewhere.

Kėtu s'do jem

Kėtu s'do jem, do jem larguar,
Nė tokė i tretur si tė tjerėt,
Nė kafenenė e preferuar,
Nuk do mė shohin kamarieret.

Dhe nėpėr udhėt, ku kam ecur
S'do ndihet kolla ime e thatė,
Mbi varrin tim do tė rrijė i heshtur,
Njė qipariz, si murg i ngratė.

Ti do trishtohesh atėherė,
Se s'do mė kesh nė dhomė tė gjallė
Dhe kur nė xham tė fryjė erė,
Do tė qash me erėn dalėngadalė.

Por, kur tė jesh mėrzitur shumė,
Nė raft tė librave kėrkomė,
Aty do tė jem i fshehur unė,
Nė ndonjė fjalė a ndonjė shkronjė.

Mjafton qė librin pak ta heqėsh,
Dhe unė do tė zbres do tė vi pranė teje,
Ti, si dikur, me mall do tė qeshėsh
Si njė blerim pas njė rrėkeje.

Heshtja

Cigaria u dogj gjer nė fund,
Mbi tryezė gjumi mė mori,
Nė xham era perdet i tund,
Dhe hesht korridori.

Me kokė nė tryezė tė flesh,
Tė shohėsh ėndrra tė blerta,
Sa ndot!...Tė zgjohesh e prapė tė gjesh,
Nė qoshe tė vjellat e lėna nga jeta.
